Science
Space and Beyond
Today we had the Science Dome in school. We learned many interesting facts. These are pictures from inside the dome. Ask your child to tell you about the visit.

This half term we are continuing with our study of
Ancient Civilisations with a focus on
Egypt
This afternoon the children were young Howard Carters. They each had the chance to crawl into a tomb to see the treasures inside armed with only a torch. Each child only had a few seconds to look around before coming out to draw what they saw with their partner.

On Wednesday 22nd February Year 5 had their outdoor learning.
They had a super time building dens and using their knot tying skills from their previous lesson.
Den Building

Today year 5 had their outdoor learning.
We practiced making lots of different types of knots and discussed how some of these were thousands of years old and would likely have been used during the early civilisations we are currently learning about.
We went outside and looked at the flooded and frozen pond area and discussed the wildlife living there but also how to keep safe around frozen water.

OUTDOOR LEARNING Y5
Tying knots
(with elements of indoor learning due to very cold fingers)
The reef knot, or square knot, is an ancient and simple binding knot used to secure a rope or line around an object. It is sometimes referred to as a Hercules knot. It is known to be 4000 years old.
The knot is formed by tying a left-handed overhand knot between two ends, instead of around one end, and then a right-handed overhand knot via the same procedure, or vice versa. A common mnemonic for this procedure is "right over left; left over right", which is often appended with the rhyming suffix "... makes a knot both tidy and tight". Two consecutive overhands tied as described above of the same handedness will make a granny knot. The working ends of the reef knot must emerge both at the top or both at the bottom, otherwise a thief knot results.
The reef knot or square knot consists of two half knots, one left and one right, one being tied on top of the other, and either being tied first...The reef knot is unique in that it may be tied and tightened with both ends. It is universally used for parcels, rolls and bundles. At sea it is always employed in reefing and furling sails and stopping clothes for drying.

Home Learning - Google Classroom
In the event of children being required to learn from home, including during periods of self-isolation, all home learning will be uploaded to Google Classroom. Here, children can find and complete their home learning before submitting it back to their teacher to be marked.
If you are unsure of how to access Google Classroom or need some help with troubleshooting, take a look at the Powerpoint below:
The children are now being asked to wear their PE kits into school on their PE days. If it is wet/muddy they may wish to bring an extra pair of shoes with them too.
